Contrast Echocardiography

What is it for?

This is performed in conjunction with an echocardiogram to assess heart anomalies. It allows the doctor to see the flow of blood through the heart and the heart muscle better.

How do I prepare?

No special preparation is required. Eat, drink, and take medications as normal.

What can I expect during the procedure?

Definity contrast, a sugar-based micro bubble, is injected via IV into a
patient’s arm vein during the echocardiogram. The agent reflects ultrasound signals as they mimic the
transit patterns of the red blood cells.

What can I expect after the procedure?

There are no side effects and patients can go back to their usual diet and activities.
