Exercise Stress Testing

What is it for?

It is used to determine how well your heart performs in times of stress, such as exercise. It is often used to determine treatment decisions, understand how well treatment is working and diagnose how severe an existing condition is.

How do I prepare?

Please wear comfortable clothing and walking/running shoes. Eat, drink, and take medications as normal unless directed otherwise by our physicians.

What can I expect during the procedure?

During the test, you will be asked to exercise on a treadmill. You will be hooked up to an
electrocardiogram (EKG) machine. This allows your doctor to monitor your heart rate. The test usually
lasts 15 minutes. It will start slowly and, as the test continues, the exercise gets more difficult. You will continue exercising until your heart rate reaches a target level or until you show signs that you cannot continue. This could include dizziness, severe shortness of breath or chest pain.

What can I expect after the procedure?

Following the procedure, you may continue to be monitored as your heart rate and breathing return to
normal. There are no side effects and patients can go back to their usual diet and activities.
