Echocardiography

What is it for?

The echocardiogram (ECHO) uses ultrasound technology to capture images of your heart. It is used to assess the overall health and function of your heart. Your doctor will suggest an echocardiogram to:

  • Check for problems with the valves or chambers of your heart,
  • Check if heart problems are the cause of symptoms such as shortness of breath or chest pain,
  • If pregnant, detect congenital heart defects before birth (fetal echocardiogram)
  • If you have heart disease, to track progress of disease over time and to evaluate effectiveness of any medical procedures.

How do I prepare?

No special preparation is required. Eat, drink, and take medications as normal.

What can I expect during the procedure?

During an echo test, a hand- held wand will be placed on your chest and will emit high-frequency sound waves. The wand will be taking pictures of the heart’s valves and chambers.

What can I expect after the procedure?

There are no side effects and patients can go back to their usual diet and activities.
